I am writing in relation to the announcement of the funding for the Tourism and Cultural Precinct below The Crossing Theatre, in Tuesday, February 14 edition of The Courier.
I question Narrabri Shire Council’s wisdom in proceeding with this development in the area proposed near The Crossing Theatre.
After seeing the long and destructive flooding last year, in which we saw the water level reaching over the second step of The Crossing Theatre, plus to the level of the bottom of the precinct sign near the current car park, – I ask council is this a wise, sensible location?
My accompanying photo (above) does not show the highest level to which the water got, but I think my point has been made.
To now see how the bank of the Narrabri Creek has been changed and washed away, including trees, should be ringing alarm bells with all concerned with this development.
The proposed development is a wonderful idea and concept for the town and visitors alike.
To see gardens, infrastructure and children’s playgrounds ruined or washed away in future flood events will be so disappointing, not to mention the cost of repairs.
Who will pay this bill, the ratepayer?
I just wish it could be built out of a major floodway.
After attending the community meetings re the flood study recommendations last year, I was led to believe that all areas close to rivers and creeks were deemed high risk – with a recommendation for no new developments to be built in these areas.
I do hope common sense prevails and we see this wonderful recreation idea come to fruition in a less vulnerable site.
