Narrabri Bowling Club hosted its round one fixture in Zone 3 Bowls’ 2022/23 season open gender pennant competition on Saturday when it took on North Tamworth.
The visitors won the contest 60 shots to 50 on the overall scoreboard and they downed Narrabri on two of the three rinks to earn nine competition points to the hosts’ one.
Narrabri is one of eight teams that is currently contesting grade four in the competition.
Those teams are split evenly across two sections, with Narrabri in section two alongside North Tamworth, West Tamworth and South Tamworth, and the other section including Barraba, Manilla, Guyra and Inverell Sporties.
Narrabri will play its first three matches at home, and will then play rounds four to six in Tamworth.
In the season opener on Saturday, Janice Foxe, Graham Rose, Eva Sadler and Trinity Kelly defeated Sebastian Lees, Luke Russell, Matthew Hooker and Allen Hemmings.
The Narrabri bowlers won their rink 23 shots to 11.
Marie Redman, Col Armstrong, Lisa Pillar and David Dewar made up one of the other teams for the hosts, and they went down 20 shots to 16 on their rink against North Tamworth’s Terry Johnson, Bradley Hogan, Archie Sheppard and Graeme Cameron.
The visitors won more comfortably on the other rink, as Narrabri’s Helen Woodward, Cindy Neil, Scott Dewar and Tony Redman lost 29 shots to 11 against Chris Passlow, Grahame Hall, Graeme Pennell and Zac Curtis.
Narrabri’s next match will be played at Narrabri Bowling Club on Saturday when it hosts South Tamworth.
South Tamworth has two points on the competition ladder after its round one loss against West Tamworth.
The South Tamworth side won two rinks, 23 shots to 19 and 23 shots to 20, but lost 29 shots to 16 on the other to go down 68 shots to 62 overall.
Those results have left Narrabri in last place at the completion of round one.
In the other section, Guyra downed Barraba 63 shots to 50 and two rinks to one, and Inverell Sporties defeated Manilla 64 shots to 47 and two rinks to one.
Meanwhile, Wee Waa Bowling Club is also playing in Zone 3 Bowls’ open gender pennants this season.
It is in section two of grade five with Lightning Ridge and grade six outfit Collarenebri.
Wee Waa hosted Lightning Ridge in round one and prevailed 77 shots to 62 overall and won one two of the three rinks to earn nine competition points.
Dot Dewson, Kerry Sadler, David Hogan and Wayne Booby lost 25 shots to 23 on their rink, Melissa Allen, Stephen Dewson, Chris Crutcher and Paul Andreassen prevailed 28 shots to 14 on theirs, and Kay Dewson, Clancy Hamilton, Phi Lawford and Dustyn Allen won 26 shots to 23 on theirs.
Wee Waa will travel to Collarenebri for round two this Saturday.
