Residents would have noticed the activity at the Wee Waa High School redevelopment site on Mitchell Street.
With the construction of the new school well underway, WWHS students have been given a unique and fantastic opportunity to tour the site and see how their new school is being built.
Each week a different group of students straps on safety gear and is given the chance to experience a site induction, an update from the Project Manager and Site Manager and a walk through the site to see how the buildings are being constructed.
The Schools NSW Infrastructure website publishes regular updates on the multi-million-dollar redevelopment project.
“We have established the construction zone at the site of the new school on Mitchell Street and bulk earthworks and levelling of the site have begun,” states the ‘next steps’ section on the site. “We will proceed with the ground works, which involve digging the trenches that will hold water drainage and sewer systems as well as inserting cables that will provide services like electricity and internet to the new school.
“We will be assessing tender applications for the demolition and refurbishment works at the existing agricultural site on Purcell Avenue and expect to begin the works in early 2023.”
The modern school plans boast a new library, multipurpose hall, environment centre, agricultural learning centre, sports fields and courts, an Indigenous Cultural Centre, and 15 learning spaces. The hall includes a performing stage and gymnasium that extends to a covered outdoor learning area facing the canteen.
The contemporary learning spaces will feature technology and furniture in a layout designed to support greater collaboration and improve study and educational outcomes.
The school will also reflect Wee Waa’s proud Gomeroi heritage and ancestral culture, thanks to students and representatives from the local Gomeroi community who contributed ideas through a series of workshops.
