Narrabri’s Caitlin Evans will represent Narrabri Little Athletics at the Little Athletics NSW State Championships event that will be hosted at Olympic Park in Sydney this weekend.
Caitlin, the daughter of Bruce and Cathy Evans, will compete in four events. They include discus, high jump, long jump, and the 800 metres.
The 14-year-old will line up in those four events across two days at state championships, having qualified by progressing through the zone and regional carnivals.
At the New England Zone Champs event in Tamworth in November, Caitlin and fellow Narrabri athlete Emily Simpson lined up in six events each, both progressing to Regional Champs in all their chosen events.
The Region One Championships, again held in Tamworth, saw both girls competing against athletes from New England/North West, Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers Districts.
A top two result would have ensured a trip to Sydney for the State Champs, and although Emily was carrying an injury, she came close with a third placing in the 200-metre hurdles.
She also did well in her throwing events as she finished fifth in discus, seventh in javelin and eighth in shot put.
Caitlin had a very successful outing at the Regional Championships event as she returned home with four silver medals and a personal best result in high jump.
She also placed fourth in javelin and triple jump.
Recently, Caitlin and her brother Matthew also competed at the NSW Country Championships at Dubbo.
These championships are run by NSW Athletics, are open to athletes across the state with the exception of metropolitan Sydney, and form a pathway for country athletes.
Caitlin and Matthew were pleased with their results. Caitlin came away with two fourth places and two sixth places, and Matthew competed in his favoured event, the discus, for a fourth place.
Meanwhile, Narrabri Little Athletics is looking forward to kicking off its winter season with a ‘come and try’ day on Sunday, April 2 at the Narrabri High School.
The club said that it looked forward to welcoming both new and returning athletes.
The session will run from 9-10.30am and the club’s annual general meeting will then get underway from 10.30am.
