The Wee Waa Bowling Club’s 2023/24 season club fours champions were crowned on Sunday when the team of Brock Allen, Brett Pillar, Jay Hall and Steve Berger scored a remarkable one-shot victory that came down to the final end.
They challenged Graham Amos, Clancy Hamilton, Hunter Doring and Paul Andreassen in the decider and prevailed 22 shots to 21 after trailing 21-20 going into the final end and scoring a two to get the job done.
The eventual champs were holding one shot as Berger lined up the last bowl of the 21st and final end, and he added a second shot to guide his side to victory.
Allen, Pillar, Hall and Berger had started the match on the front foot as they scored two shots on each of the opening two ends to establish a 4-0 lead.
However, Amos, Hamilton, Doring and Andreassen powered into the lead with a six on the third end.
Allen, Pillar, Hall and Berger then levelled the score up at 6-all with a two on the fourth end, and it was even at 7-all after six ends and 10-all after nine ends.
Amos, Hamilton, Doring and Andreassen then broke away as they won four of the next five ends to go ahead 17-11 after 14, but Allen, Pillar, Hall and Berger then went on a run of their own as they won four straight ends a combined nine shots to none to lead 20-17 with three ends left to play.
Amos, Hamilton, Doring and Andreassen turned the game on its head when they scored two shots on the 19th end and two more on the 20th to take a 21-20 lead into the 21st and final end, but Berger and his team got the job done to score one of the great final victories at the Wee Waa Bowling Club.
Meanwhile, the Wee Waa Bowling Club’s 2023/24 season A-grade triples competition got underway on Sunday afternoon when Hunter, Peter and Zack Doring defeated Graham Amos, Charlie Thompson and Gary Nolan 29 shots to 20.
The Dorings went on a five-end run to start the match to set up an early 5-0 lead, and they won three of the next four ends to go ahead 12-1 after nine.
Amos, Thompson and Nolan then went on a superb run of their own as they claimed five ends in a row to reduce their deficit to 12-11.
However, just as they got within striking distance, the Dorings scored a five on the 15th end to pull away again. Amos, Thompson and Nolan eventually got themselves within five shots of the Dorings when the scoreboard read 23-18 after 22 ends with three left to play, but the Dorings won two of those ends to secure a 29 shots to 20 victory.
