Narrabri Netball Association hosted its 2023 junior carnival at the local Bev Burrows Courts on Sunday, at which two local teams were victorious.

There were 14 teams in action across two age groups on the day as eight contested the under-11/12 division and six lined up in the under-9/10 division.

The winning team in the under-11/12s was Wee Waa Firebirds, and the under-9/10 champions were the Narrabri side, Rubies.

NNA president Tracey Tomlinson told The Courier that there was some impressive netball played on the day.

“Considering we only had the two age groups, it was a pretty good show, really,” she said.

“We had teams come from Moree, Tamworth, Mungindi and Walgett and then there were our Narrabri and Wee Waa players as well.

“It was a pretty good day and the kids had a lot of fun.”

In the under-11/12 division, the Firebirds finished on top of the eight-team ladder after going through the day undefeated. They won six of their seven games and drew the other. The draw was against the Swan Jewels, a Tamworth side that finished the day ranked second.

The Wee Waa team was a mixed team that featured players from the NNA under-11/12 competition from both Wee Waa and Narrabri.

There were four players from C and W Firebirds, three from the Namoi Cotton Thunderbirds and three from Lightning.

They gelled together well on the day and were simply too good for their opposition, scoring 65 goals across the day and only conceding 32.

Third-placed Walgett and fourth-placed Moree 12s both finished on 10 points following five wins and two losses on the day, and in the end, they could only be separated by for and against difference.

Narrabri teams Giants and Swifts were fifth and sixth, respectively, as Giants won three games to finish the day on six points and Swifts won two matches to end the day on four points. Two Moree under-11s teams were ranked seventh and eighth.

In the under-9/10 division, local girls in the Rubies team kicked off their day with a dominant 8-0 victory over Walgett Yellow and they never looked back as they finished the day on top of the table with 10 points.

They won all five of their matches, during which they scored 34 goals and conceded six, which were both tournament bests in their division.

Fellow Narrabri team The Opals placed second in that age group after winning four of their five games to end up on eight points. Their only loss was against Rubies, and the score in their encounter was 5-4.

The Walgett Blue and Walgett Yellow teams finished the day in third and fourth, respectively, after Walgett Blue won three games and Walgett Yellow prevailed twice.

The third Narrabri side in the under- 9/10 division was Diamonds, which placed fifth after winning one of its games, while Grasshoppers ended up ranked sixth.
