Narrabri travellers will have access to Newcastle Airport following the announcement of direct flights between the North West and Hunter Valley.

Regional airline FlyPelican has announced twice-weekly flights between Newcastle and Narrabri will start later this month.

The company anticipates the new route will provide connectivity for both leisure and business travellers.

FlyPelican chief executive officer Henry Murcott says there is strong demand for a service to connect essential workers.

“We’re thrilled to introduce this new service, a direct reflection of the increasing demand and our dedication to serve regional communities. It will provide convenient travel for FIFO workers, the agricultural sector, and Hunter New England Health professionals,” Mr Murcott said.

Narrabri Shire mayor Ron Campbell welcomed the addition of a second airline utilising Narrabri Airport for its services.

“Any airline offering services at the Narrabri Airport is welcome,” Cr Campbell said.

“Newcastle is a place where people go to from Narrabri so it is fantastic.”

While the new route is expected to particularly benefit fly in, fly out workers, Cr Campbell said the route enables a connection to the growing Newcastle Airport which is starting to look at international flight opportunities.

Cr Campbell said Newcastle was well-connected to Narrabri through local students pursuing education opportunities in the city in addition to Narrabri residents who use health services at Newcastle facilities including the John Hunter Hospital.

“If it has some success it will grow,” Cr Campbell said of the route.

Mr Murcott said the introduction of the Newcastle to Narrabri route allows greater opportunity for people in the west to fly to Newcastle Airport and connect seamlessly onward to other destinations.

Newcastle Airport’s executive general manager of aviation business development and freight Andrew Warrender welcomed the new addition to FlyPelican’s route map.

“Connecting Narrabri to Newcastle is a great example of how FlyPelican continues to keep regional communities connected,” he said.

“Residents of Narrabri can now enjoy swift access to Newcastle’s vibrant culture, beautiful beaches, and thriving business scene. Similarly, Novocastrians can explore the unique offerings of Narrabri, including its rich agricultural heritage and scenic beauty.”
