The promising rugby union career of Narrabri’s Jonty Fowler will reach an exciting new height on Sunday when the former Blue Boars junior lines up wearing the number 10 jersey for the NSW Waratahs side in the 2023 Super Rugby men’s under-16s competition’s grand final.
The Waratahs have won all four of their games en route to the decider a combined 233-38 to earn the right to defend the championship that they won in 2022.
They will challenge Queensland in the big dance at Canberra’s Seiffert Oval after the Reds placed second on the five-team ladder.
NSW will also look to defend their 2022 under-19s championship as well when the second-placed Waratahs go head-to-head with ladder leaders, the ACT Brumbies.
Finishing on top of the table in that age group earned the Brumbies the hosting rights of the two deciders.
The Waratahs’ under-16s side have been simply outstanding across their four regular season matches. They are a classy, well-balanced side with the perfect mixture of size and skill.
Jonty lined up in two of their games, including last Sunday’s massive 94-14 thrashing of the Western Force at the Forshaw Rugby Park in Sutherland.
He played the entire first half as the NSW boys went into the break ahead 59-0, and he then came on to play the final 15 minutes to help guide the side home to an emphatic 80-point win.
Jonty also lined up in a 51-9 victory against the Melbourne Rebels at Box Hill Rugby Union Football Club, and the Waratahs side won their other two games 50-5 against the ACT Brumbies and 38-10 against Queensland Reds.
The four results saw the high-flying NSW Waratahs side finish the regular season both undefeated and boasting a positive points differential of 195.
However, Sunday’s decider will be a true test of their ability to get the job done in a high-pressure situation with the championship on the line.
Excitingly, for those who cannot make it to Canberra to watch Jonty and his talented NSW Waratahs team in action, the match will be broadcast live on Stan Sports from midday.
