By Cr DARRELL TIEMENS

As we begin a new year, I hope that you all had a well-deserved break.

As you know, the Duck Creek fire took up a lot of time and resources from the council.

As the mayor, I attended all the daily LEMC (Local Emergency Management Committee) meetings for this emergency.

The meetings were held at the Fire Control Centre and were capably led by our director of infrastructure delivery, with strong support from council’s personal assistant and administration coordinator, RFS incident commander Supt Bron Waters, and Chief Inspector Robert Dunn.

In the room were representatives from Ambulance NSW, NSW Health, Transport for NSW, Essential Energy, Forestry Commission, National Parks and Wildlife, SES, Fire and Rescue NSW, and other agencies.

It was great to see all our emergency services working so well together.

Several outsiders told me that our emergency services in Narrabri always step up so well during times of need.

I also caught up last week with NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Peter Thurtell APM, who conveyed his appreciation for our efforts.

Special mention to our council staff who helped out throughout this incident.

Over 140,000 hectares were burnt, serving as a stark reminder of the dangers that require us all to remain vigilant.

Luckily, no lives were lost, and no homes were destroyed.

On to some other important matters.

Please come along to our Australia Day events across the shire.

This year’s ambassador, Mr Clyde Campbell AM, will be joining me for our events.

I look forward to seeing you all there.
