Major Thomas Mitchell, who explored his way through the Narrabri district in 1832 had quite a few claims to fame. Mitchell fought the last duel with pistols in Australia in 1851 against Stuart Donaldson who four years later became the first premier of NSW. And Major Mitchell allegedly invented the canvas water bag, getting the idea from Aborigines’ kangaroo skin water bags.
