Champions were crowned as Narrabri Touch hosted the 2024 season mixed competition grand final night under lights at Hogan Oval on Monday. Sprayerbarn Spinouts, Win Or Booze and One Hit Wonders were all winners on the night as some sensational touch footy was contested.
The Spinouts continued their stranglehold over the A-grade title after they prevailed for the third year in a row when they beat Just Gammin 9-4.
Just Gammin went into grand final night undefeated, having won 14 of their 15 matches and drawn the other, which made the Spinouts’ victory all the more impressive.
Nick Anderson, Lincoln Saunders and Jydon Hill all bagged doubles in their side’s five-try win and Connor Hill, Jock Small and Cassidy Morley chipped in with the other three. Jordan Harvey scored two of Just Gammin’s four tries and teammates Mackenzie Knox and Clifford Toomey Junior claimed the other two.
The player of the match was awarded to Saunders, who produced a brilliant game in his first A-grade grand final. Saunders is just 14-years-old and is a product of Narrabri Touch’s junior touch footy system.
The B-grade grand final saw Win Or Booze win their second title in three years after they prevailed in 2022 and went down in the 2023 decider. They came back bigger and better this year and scored a dominant 5-1 win against Banksia Babes and Blokes on Monday night.
Hamish Duncan bagged a double and his teammates George Scilley and Brock and Jonty Schwager scored a try each. Banksia Babes and Blokes’ lone try was claimed by Matt McDonnell.
Jonty Schwager had a standout game for Win Or Booze and was named the player of the final.
In C-grade, One Hit Wonders were too good for Touch ‘n’ Go as they won 5-2.
Waldo Botha crossed for two tries for the winning team and their other three were shared between Matt and Lach Hall and Jake Oxley. Steve Phelps and Mark Rottger went over for Touch ‘n’ Go.
One Hit Wonders’ Matt Hall was named player of the match.
A presentation was held after the A-grade grand final had wrapped up. Just Gammin’s Isaiah Cochrane was named the men’s top try-scorer with 34 tries, and Hammertime’s Lidia McCauley was named the ladies’ top try-scorer with 11 tries. McCauley was also announced as the recipient of the referee award.
Narrabri Touch’s president Mereka Gleeson told The Courier that it was an enjoyable night at Hogan Oval and the games were all entertaining.
“It was a really good night,” Gleeson said.
“The games were top quality. It was really great to see. Everyone played in great spirits and they seemed to be really enjoying themselves.
“There was a fantastic crowd for the cold weather we had. There were lots of portable heaters around the field that were helpful for the spectators, which was good.
“I didn’t get to see much of the A-grade final because I was sorting out prizes for the presentation, but from what I heard, it was a really good game. Close to start off with, and then Sprayerbarn got the upper hand and kept leading for the rest of the game.”
Narrabri Touch are now preparing for the men’s and ladies’ competitions that will be played in season two from early August until December.
Before then, Narrabri Touch will host their 2024 annual general meeting on Wednesday, July 3, at the Tourist Hotel.
The 2024 Yowie Cup is scheduled to be held at Dangar Park on Saturday, September 14.
