On Tuesday, August 27, 32 Year 9 and 10 students travelled to Newcastle University to compete in the state finals of the Science and Engineering challenge.
Students competed against the top schools in NSW vying for a place in the national titles to be held in Townsville in October this year.
The main challenge for the competition is the bridge building challenge.
A selected group of students from each school are challenged to build a light and strong model bridge that can support a trolley carrying ‘gold’ ingots from one side of a test rig to the other.
Lighter bridges earn more points than heavier bridges each time the trolley (and ingots) successfully crosses the gap.
The Narrabri team was victorious over James Ruse Agricultural High School on day one of the competition, an outstanding achievement from the Narrabri girls.
“Our Year 9 and 10 students demonstrated incredible dedication, teamwork and responsibility throughout the entirety of the Science and Engineering Challenge State final,” said Narrabri High School Science teacher Mr Creasey.
“Despite the difficulties they faced during the activities, they remained focused on the tasks and resilient, with some growing their leadership skills throughout the day,” he said.
“Winning the bridge competition was a testament to the hard work and perseverance.
“The bridge group of Charleigh Bennett, Lily Bogdanoff, Paganne Ryman and Maddison Sparrow, showed extraordinary spirit throughout the whole event and came through with a very positive result for the school, one that the host said he had only seen three times before in the past.”
“Though we didn’t secure the overall victory, the growth and achievements of the students were truly remarkable.”
