The return of Wee Waa Bowling Club’s triples carnival was a successful one as 11 teams lined up at the Laurie Hoad synthetic green on Saturday for an enjoyable day of bowls.

Teams played either three or four 14-end matches across the day, with the players travelling from Narrabri, Gunnedah and even Newcastle to join local Wee Waa bowlers.

The winning team included the Wee Waa Bowling Club bowls co-ordinator Bruce Cowan, who teamed up with Gunnedah’s father-and-son duo Scott and Tim Thorning.

They won all four of their games as they prevailed 12 shots to six in game one, 23 shots to nine in game two, and 14 shots to nine in both their third and fourth games.

The Wee Waa trio of Todd Cowan, Ty Baker and Kyne Allen also won four games on the day as they got up 18 shots to seven in game one, 14 shots to 11 in game two, 14 shots to 12 in game three and 17 shots to seven in game four.

Those results saw the two teams’ margins decide the champion, which meant Cowan and the Thorning duo got the job done with a for and against difference of 30 compared to Baker, Cowan and Allen’s 26.

Two Narrabri trios were next best as the team of Stuart Coleman and Scott and David Dewar and the team of Steve Daskey, Len Ryan and Graham Rose both scored three wins each. Coleman and the Dewar brothers claimed third place with a margin of 26 after winning 14 shots to nine in game one, losing 12 shots to 14 in game two, picking up eight shots to none due to a bye in game three and winning 20 shots to five in game four, while Daskey, Ryan and Rose ended up with a margin of 22 after they won 16 shots to 12 in game one, picked up eight shots to none in game two due to the bye, won 24 shots to nine in game three and went down 14 shots to nine against the champions in their final game of the day.

It was a competitive day as every team that took part won at least one game, and it was an enjoyable one too, with club officials declaring that it was a friendly atmosphere.

The club is hopeful that the event will return bigger and better in 2025.

Meanwhile, Wee Waa Bowling Club will host the 2023/24 season awards presentation event this Sunday. A game of social bowls will be played from 10am and will be followed by a barbecue lunch and the presentation of awards to the winners and runners-up of this season’s competitions.

The 2024/25 campaign is just around the corner, with Wee Waa Bowling Club recently naming their teams for the new pennant competition.

The Wee Waa men are in division three and have been placed in section two alongside Narrabri and Manilla. Lightning Ridge were also set to play in that section but have withdrawn.

The former home and away style format has been scrapped this season, and all divisions will now see teams play each other once each across one weekend at a neutral venue.

There will be three rounds played, and for Wee Waa those will be held at the Moree Services Club on Saturday and Sunday, September 21 and 22. Wee Waa will play against Manilla on Saturday morning and will then have a bye that afternoon before they challenge Narrabri in round three on Sunday morning. The Wee Waa men will stay in Moree overnight at the Burke and Wills Motel.

The Saturday afternoon match will see Narrabri take on Manilla.

The winner of section two will then go into a playoff with the section one and section three winners. Section one is made up of Inverell Sporties, Guyra and Glen Innes, and section three includes Kootingal, Quirindi, South Tamworth and West Tamworth.

Wee Waa’s teams are as follows:
Team one – Steve Berger, Paul Andreassen, Kevin Baker and Chris Crutcher; team two – Trinity Kelly, Peter Doring, Phil Lawford and Kyne Allen; team three – Ty Baker, Bruce Cowan, Jay Hall and Toby Reynolds; reserve – Clancy Hamilton; manager – Brett Pillar.
