ABC recently conducted its first Australian insect of the year poll, with the blue-banded bee being voted the most popular insect. A total of 13,593 people voted with 6815 votes choosing the blue-banded bee from a field of six insect finalists. The common hoverfly received the second highest number of votes, followed by the Bogong moth, golden stag beetle, Lord Howe Island stick insect while the Eltham copper butterfly received 7.7 per cent of votes.
