Ever thought why tropical cyclones have names? The reason is they are named to help with communication. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, naming a cyclone helps to raise its profile, heightening public awareness and reduce confusion when there are several cyclones at the same time. The first cyclones to have official names were Audrey and Bessie in January in 1964. Only female names were used until 1975. There is a list of approved names, in alphabetical order by the first letter and it alternates between male and female names, but each a single word. When a cyclone needs a name, the bureau uses the next name in alphabetical order.
