A new chapter begins for telecommunications in Narrabri, with the arrival of axxis – a proudly regional business taking the reins of the former Telstra store.

In 2021, Telstra made a strategic decision to take ownership of its previously independent Telstra Licensed Stores.

Since then, Telstra Narrabri has operated under direct corporate management.

But for a company with 35,000 staff and a market capitalisation exceeding $50 billion, running a retail outlet in a small country town proved a challenge.

Rather than closing the store, Telstra turned to its partner network for support.

Enter axxis – a Telstra Partner that was founded in 1989 by regional business leader and former Dubbo mayor, Mathew Dickerson.

With a longstanding belief in the strength of regional communities, Dickerson has operated several successful ventures across NSW, including AXXIS Technology, ComStall and 3ti.

axxis opened the doors at 147 Maitland Street just before Easter and locals have already been impressed by a return to customer-first service.

Gone are the iPad check-ins, appointments, and waitlists. Customers will once again be greeted and served directly, just like in any traditional retail setting.

The store’s existing team has been retained, with new staff joining to bolster support.

The change brings not only a refreshed business approach but a renewed focus on community engagement and personalised service.

To mark the occasion, axxis Narrabri is hosting a grand opening celebration on Saturday, May 3.

Mayor Darrell Tiemens will cut the ribbon, joined by special guest Dr Karl Kruszelnicki – Australia’s favourite science communicator.

More than $10,000 in prizes will be up for grabs, with the first 50 attendees receiving a signed copy of Dr Karl’s latest book.

“For over three decades, axxis has combined technology with genuine service,” said Mr Dickerson.

“We’re excited to now bring that to Narrabri.”

Dr Karl added, “I love events that bring people together to celebrate knowledge, curiosity, and learning. I’m looking forward to being in Narrabri to meet locals with curious minds.”

With axxis now at the helm, Narrabri’s telecommunications future looks smarter, friendlier – and proudly regional.
