Narrabri High has welcomed the permanent appointment of a principal, with Emily McInerney taking on the school’s top leadership position.

Ms McInerney, who was previously the deputy principal, has embraced the new opportunity while continuing her passion for education.

Growing up in Gunnedah, and with family connections to Narrabri and Boggabri, Ms McInerney understands the important role education institutions play in regional communities.

“At school I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. I was very lucky to have incredible teachers who modelled a strong passion for teaching and learning which was contagious,” she said.

“I saw the difference they made every day, and I am lucky enough now to call a number of these teachers friends and mentors.”

A proud public education student herself, Ms McInerney went on to complete her university studies with UNE.

She transferred to Narrabri High School as the deputy principal in 2023 and has enjoyed all the town has to offer.

“I could see the potential of the school, the students and working with such an incredible staff the school was able to partner with stakeholders to create the ‘CAN DO – Imagine your Future group’ which creates opportunities for students and offer personalised pathways in the local area,” Ms McInerney said.

“Narrabri is such a supportive community and with so many industries and prospects these partnerships allow for tailored experiences and curriculum pathways to support success for students.”

When asked about what inspired her to pursue a leadership role in education, Ms McInerney praised the strong and supportive leaders who empowered others to build their skills as a leader.

“I had opportunities to work with outstanding colleagues and experience a variety of leadership roles which allowed me to develop my skills and make a difference for students,” she said.

“As a leader it is a privilege to be able to drive change and innovation and seeing students achieve is very rewarding.”

In regards to her new role, Ms McInerney said she will strive to have a balanced approach to leadership where a positive environment is promoted, respectful relationships are formed and there is a shared accountability for success.

“Our team will continue to develop personalised pathways for students through strong relationships with the Narrabri community, quality teaching and learning experiences, a wide range of curriculum offerings and a dedicated teaching staff who are committed to developing student skills through our extensive extra-curricular, careers and sporting programs,” she said.

“We will continue to achieve academic excellence, incorporate technology, and strengthen community partnerships to promote holistic student development. We aim to cultivate an inclusive and innovative learning environment that inspires students to become lifelong learners and active contributors to the community.”

Ms McInerney said she wants to continue to foster open communication and actively engage in collaborative activities that promote trust and understanding.

“By creating opportunities for feedback and involvement, I want to establish a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and connected,” she said.

“Narrabri High has reintroduced the Respect, Involvement, Success and Engagement (RISE) values to encourage respect and diversity, while our staff are participating in the REAL Schools initiative, which aims to strengthen relationships and create a positive school culture to boost student engagement and wellbeing.

“By maintaining consistency, setting high expectations, and fostering strong connections, we will ensure students feel valued within the school community.”

While a change of leadership can prove challenging, the two years Ms McInerney has spent at Narrabri High puts her in good stead to drive the campus forward into the future.

“I have built strong relationships with the students, staff, parents and the community,” she said.

“Our team will continue to support one another to offer a high-quality education for our students.

“I would like to continue to build strong relationships with staff, students, and the community, while enhancing student outcomes through new programs and teacher development.”

Away from school life, Ms McInerney enjoys spending quality time with family and friends.

You will find her supporting her children in sport, including rugby union, netball, touch football and soccer.

Ms McInerney has enjoyed Narrabri’s friendly hospitality and has offered the same to the school community.

“I want to thank our parents, carers and the community for their continued support. If you have any concerns or would like to discuss anything regarding your child’s progress or wellbeing, please feel free to reach out,” she said.

“I encourage you to make an appointment to meet with me, so we have dedicated time to talk.”
