A 76-year-old Far North Queensland man has been fined for negligent driving after crossing onto the wrong side of the highway and crashing through the Bellata Police Station fence.
The incident occurred at 4.55am on June 24. The man had been driving a four-wheel drive and was towing a custom-made trailer.
Police believe fatigue was a major factor of the incident.
After veering onto the wrong side of the highway, the driver mounted the gutter and damaged the fence, sign and flag pole while also colliding with a vehicle parked in the driveway.
Emergency services were called to the incident. Significant damage was reported to the fence, parked vehicle as well as the driver’s vehicle. The driver had been travelling from Victoria overnight.
Police have issued a stern reminder to motorists about the dangers of fatigue.
Local shopkeepers encouraged to report thefts to police
Shopkeepers are being encouraged to report incidents of shoplifting to police.
It follows recent success in police fining people for stealing items from local stores.
Under NSW laws, minor shoplifting offences can attract a $300 penalty notice. More serious offences can result in court-enforced penalties including higher fines and potential prison sentences.
Narrabri police are investigating an incident of theft at a Maitland Street pharmacy between 12.30-12.40pm on June 19.
A 32-year-old woman allegedly stole beauty products.
In a separate incident, a 15-year-old girl and 24-year-old woman allegedly stole a fishing knife from a Maitland Street retail outlet.
Three-vehicle accident on Cooma Road
Emergency services responded to a three-vehicle accident on Cooma Road, at the Bridge Street intersection, on June 24.
Two sedans and one ute were involved in the incident, which occurred at 4.07pm.
The collision occurred when one of the sedans attempted to turn right onto Bridge Street. The driver of the ute collided with the rear of the sedan, pushing it into the path of a sedan travelling south on the highway.
Two of the vehicles had to be towed from the scene. No serious injuries were reported, however, two people were conveyed to hospital as a precaution.
The driver of the ute, a 24-year-old man, will receive an infringement notice in relation to the collision.
Police continue investigation into damaged windscreens
Police are continuing investigations into a spate of damage to local vehicles, including smashed windscreens.
The spate of offences occurred in the early hours of June 22.
The alleged offender has been described as a Caucasian male in his 20s, about 5’7 in height and of a thin build. At the time of the incidents, he was reported as wearing a black hooded jumper.
Two incidents are reported to have occurred on Tibbereena Street, two on Gibbons Street, one behind The Crossing Theatre and another on Dangar Street.
A number of items are the subject of forensic analysis.
