Bowls NSW hosted the 2024/25 season Junior Inter-Regions Sides Championship tournament at Club Dubbo across the weekend, where Wee Waa Bowling Club’s Kyne Allen was part of the championship-winning North West team.
There were 14 regions represented across the weekend, all of which fielded squads of seven players. Four players from each of those squads teamed up to play fours, two others linked up to play pairs, and one contested the singles.
Kyne was a part of North West’s fours side that went through the weekend undefeated to claim the gold medal and help guide the region to a first-place finish on the overall points tally.
He and teammates Jaiden Elliott from Tamworth City, Coen Schroeder from South Tamworth and Jacob Martin from Gunnedah were placed into section one alongside Riverina Murray, Greater Newcastle and Metro South-West, all of which they defeated on Saturday.
They met Riverina Murray in game one, during which the two sides were locked at 10-all after 12 ends with three left to play. North West then scored four shots on the 13th and another four shots on the 14th to cruise home to a dominant 18 shots to 11 victory.
A round two clash against Greater Newcastle saw North West concede six of the first eight ends to trail 10 shots to four, but they powered their way to a 15 shots to 10 victory after securing all of the next seven ends.
The third and final sectional game against Metro South-West was another thriller as the two sides were locked at five shots each after 10 ends. North West then claimed the next three to go ahead 10 shots to five, and Metro South-West won the final two ends but only accumulated four shots to fall one short as it finished 10-9.
That victory saw North West top the section one ladder and locked them in to play against the section two winners Metro North-West on Sunday morning.
North West got off to a strong start to lead nine shots to two after seven ends, and they were ahead 14 shots to six after 11 ends.
Metro North-West claimed three of the final four ends but North West prevailed 15 shots to 11 to advance to the decider.
They challenged section three winners ACT in the final and secured a gold medal finish after scoring their biggest win of the weekend as they prevailed 25 shots to 12.
The North West side were stunned early on in that match as they trailed eight shots to nothing after two ends, but they fought back to go ahead nine shots to eight after five ends before taking seven of the last 10 ends to win by 13 shots.
The North West singles representative was Tim Thorning, who earned a silver medal after he won all of his pool matches and his semi-final clash before going down 21 shots to 14 against Illawarra’s Travis Moran in the final.
The North West pairs team was Ella and Charli Cameron from Gunnedah, who won two of their three pool games and ended up placing sixth overall.

Regions earned points based on where they placed in the singles, the pairs and the fours, with the winners receiving 20 points and the lowest-ranked side given three points, meaning the top tally a region could have scored at the event was 60 and the lowest they could have scored was nine.
