Members of the Pilliga community held and celebrated another successful Pilliga NAIDOC event on July 24 at the Pilliga community centre.
People embraced this year’s theme – The next generation, strength, vision and legacy.
A highlight of the day was having the Walkabout Barber team led by owner Brian Dowd coming to the community and sharing with everyone.
Many smiling faces looking good and feeling good, inside and out. Wellbeing checks were provided for attendees who wanted to engage with the team.
This year’s NAIDOC event was a success, thanks to many wonderful people and services. Clinton and Charmaine Lamb travelled from Narrabri to assist with the Welcome to Country smoking ceremony led by Clifford Toomey Snr. Mila Doolan, Caleb Mitchell and Izavier Mitchell raised the Aboriginal flag.
Then followed by the cutting of the amazing cake by elder Frances Doolan and emerging young leader Tyleena Smith.
Clinton and Charmaine also spent time with children at Pilliga Public School. They shared knowledge, culture, music and language with the children but most of all they had fun.
School principal Mrs Stewart was very thankful for the learning experience not only for the students but the teachers, who learnt a lot as well.
A special thank you was made to Ducky Dennis and Daphne for coming to Pilliga from Walgett and contributing to the great atmosphere of the event. These beautiful people donated their time just for the community.
More highlights included seeing all the smiling faces of community members, especially elders and children. Lunch was served up by the Chef B woodfired pizza, provided by NDCAS, with fresh fruit platters by Healthwise, cold drinks, tea and coffee provided by Narrabri Shire Council.
