The first champion of Narrabri Bowling Club’s 2025/26 season was crowned on Thursday and it was a thrilling finale to determine the winner of the women’s senior singles competition.
Di Chessells and Eva Sadler went head-to-head in the first final of the new campaign, and Chessells prevailed 25 shots to 24 after 26 ends of play following an impressive comeback.
Sadler stormed out to an early 10 shots to one lead after claiming five of the first six ends, but that advantage was soon gone as Chessells went on a five-end run, during which she scored 13 shots to go ahead 14-10.
There were just two points in it after 16 ends as Chessells led 16 shots to 14 before she claimed the 17th, 18th and 19th ends to establish a 22 shots to 14 lead in the first-to-25 match.
Sadler then fought her way back into the game as she took the 20th, 21st and 22nd ends to reduce her deficit to one shot.
A one to Chessells on the 23rd end saw her go ahead 23 shots to 21, but Sadler scored two shots on the 24th end to tie the game up before she registered one shot on the 25th end to take the lead for the first time since she was ahead 10-8 on the eighth end.
It all came down to the 26th end, and Chessells produced some clutch bowls to score the two shots that she needed for victory as she claimed the title with a 25 shots to 24 victory.
Social bowls was also played on Thursday, with two pairs matches and two triples games contested.
Dawn Armstrong and Tony Redman beat Glennis Godden and Stuart Coleman 22-8, Berice Eather and Debbie Gleeson defeated Dee Fletcher and Keith Stoltenberg 19-15, Rhonda Fitzgerald, Bruce Tomlinson and Cindy Neil downed Carol Armstrong, Colin Armstrong and Kay Carolan 18-12, and Heather Caton, Gloria Campey and Lyn Tuckey outscored Trish Allison, Janet Coleman and Ronnie Dewar 31-6.
This weekend will see the second semi-final of the men’s club singles to be played on Saturday. Tony Redman will challenge Steve Daskey, with Scott Dewar to be the marker.
