Safer crossings for Quirindi

Work is underway on the upgrade to the Callaghans Lane level crossing near Quirindi.

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said he had been campaigning for the upgrade alongside concerned community members.

“Any death on our roads is a tragedy for families and local communities which is why the government must do everything they can to make dangerous rail crossings safer,” Mr Anderson said.

“Following a tragic fatal accident at the Callaghans Lane crossing, the local community contacted me deeply concerned about safety, with limited visibility and a growing number of vehicles using the road.

“The crossing needed to be upgraded which is why I took the community’s concerns directly to the Minister requesting that the government make the crossing safer for locals.

“Following our strong advocacy, the government responded announcing that a new warning system would be installed including flashing lights and advance warning signage that is automatically triggered by an approaching train would be installed.

“I’ve been keeping the pressure on since that announcement, ensuring that work begins as soon as possible.

“I can now update the community that work began today, which is very welcome news for the local community.”

Transport for NSW have advised that work is scheduled to occur between Monday, July 14 and Friday, July 25. Work will take place between 7am and 5pm on both weekdays and weekends.

The level crossing will continue to be open to road users throughout the work.

“This is a big win for local residents who regularly use the crossing, and I’d like to thank all those who contacted me concerned about the safety of Callaghans Lane level crossing,” Mr Anderson concluded.
