Narrabri Rugby Club’s women’s 10s team made more history on Saturday as they scored a 40-7 victory over the Moree Bulls at Weebolla Oval in the 14th and final round of Central North Rugby Union’s regular season.
After becoming the first women’s team in the zone to win three straight minor premierships earlier this year, and last year becoming the first women’s side to win back-to-back premierships, the Blue Boars raised the bar even higher in 2025 as they became the first side to go through the regular season undefeated since the women’s division was introduced back in 2018.
They also became the first team to accumulate every point on offer as they ended the season on 68 points, which was the most they could have earned with 12 games and two byes. Three of those matches were forfeit victories and the other nine were all bonus point wins for scoring four or more tries.
They will go in search of more history when their finals campaign begins later this month as they look to become the first team to go through the entire season unbeaten, but for now they are soaking in their success following Saturday’s win.
Narrabri outscored Moree six tries to one and five conversions to one to earn a 33-point win, which looked set to be a 40-0 shutout until the Bulls ran in a late converted try.
The Blue Boars were again outnumbered in terms of player numbers as they only had two on the bench to Moree’s seven, which has been one of the most significant challenges the Narrabri side has faced all season.
Coach Andrew Gale told The Courier that his players should be proud of themselves and what they have achieved as a group so far this season.
“I’m super proud of the girls,” Gale said.“For a bunch of girls from all different sporting backgrounds to gel into a rugby team that has gone through undefeated is just amazing.
“I don’t think we’ve even reached our full potential yet. I think we have more left in us.
“If we can play for 40 minutes the way we have been for 20 or 30 each week, I think we can beat anyone in the finals.
“Going forward, I think our biggest challenge is a mental one. Some of our girls, as rugby players, don’t know what it’s like to lose.
“Some of our senior players who have been there and know what it’s like to lose are keeping everyone grounded though.
“The newer girls, all year, have always listened, and that makes things so much easier.
“Above all, they’re all having fun together. It’s been a really good year so far.”
Narrabri Rugby Club’s president Daniel Kahl was equally as proud and impressed by what the club’s women’s side has achieved this year.
“It’s a phenomenal achievement and we’re very proud of the girls,” Kahl said.
“Considering the expectations at the start of the season after having a few players move on and expecting the new group to take a bit of time to find their groove, it’s an absolute credit to the senior players in the squad who have stepped up and who have taken new players under their wing, and it’s a credit to the newer and younger players who have taken on everything they’ve been taught by the senior players and coaches, and the way they’ve fit in to the team.
“It’s also a massive credit to Galey (coach Andrew Gale).
“They’ve moulded a style of their own through the season. It’s been fun watching some of the players who have been there for a while play different roles to what they have in the past.
“The way they have moved the ball efficiently has been really good. They’ve been good with contact and at the breakdown, and the talent they have out wide is killer.
“It’s been a lot of fun watching them improve this year and finish the way they have, with more to play for obviously.”
The Blue Boars have now earned a break this weekend and will take on the Tamworth Pirates in the major semi-final in Gunnedah later this month on Saturday, August 23. The winner of that match will qualify for the grand final, which will be played on Saturday, September 6.
Pirates ended up finishing 16 points behind the Blue Boars after ending the year on 52 points following eight wins, a draw and three losses.
This Saturday’s minor semi-final will see third-placed Gunnedah Red Devils challenge fourth-placed Moree Bulls for a chance to advance to the preliminary final.
Barraba missed out on fourth spot by one point and Inverell were 22 points back in sixth.
