Boggabri Kangaroos’ reserve grade team earned a crucial win on Saturday when they travelled to Kootingal Sportsground and secured the two competition points with a 24-18 victory.
The six-point round 14 victory over Kootingal-Moonbi Roosters saw the Roos end the weekend in fourth place, two points clear of Gunnedah Bulldogs, who they will meet this Saturday in a rescheduled round 13 contest.
Boggabri’s for and against difference is 84 more than Gunnedah’s so the Bulldogs will have to win by 43 points in the last game of the regular season to swing that in their favour. A win, a draw or a loss by less than that margin in the derby match would see Boggabri clinch a finals spot.
Boggabri went ahead 4-0 in the second minute in round 14 as Ben Haire crossed for the first try of the game, and it became 10-0 10 minutes later as Josh Trindall converted a Bailey Toomey try.
A Will Devine four-pointer in the 28th minute split two Kooti tries, one of which the home team converted, and the score was 14-10 in Boggabri’s favour at half-time.
The away side struck first when Clayton Bruce crossed to make it 18-10 nine minutes after play had restarted, but it was 18-all with 13 minutes remaining after the Roosters scored tries in the 38th and 57th minutes.
However, a Robert Doolan match-winner with less than three minutes on the clock secured a crucial win for Boggabri, with Trindall adding the extras to make the final score 24-18.
