Filming the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident on a smartphone and posting it online should be illegal, according to the Member for Barwon Roy Butler.
Mr Butler’s call for the law to be updated follows a recent tragic accident near Narrabri, which involved the death of a teenage boy.
Footage of the aftermath of the accident, including of the teenager, had been uploaded to social media.
“It’s hard to imagine how traumatic it would be for family and friends of the victim to come across footage of the accident online,” said Mr Butler.
“Filming fatal accidents is such a horrible invasion of privacy and raises serious questions about the level of decency and respect we should accept as a society.
“Traipsing through an accident scene can also potentially interfere with police investigations.
“I’ve written to the NSW government Attorney General, Michael Daley MP, and plan to meet with him to discuss offences and whether the law needs to be changed.”
