Year 11 Narrabri High School student Caitlin Evans has been selected for the opportunity of a lifetime, the Country to Canberra program.

The prestigious annual competition awards winners with a ‘Power Trip’ to Canberra where participants meet inspiring politicians and leaders, receive leadership and public speaking training, tour parliament, score a mentor, and get their work published.

After learning of the initiative, Caitlin, the daughter of Bruce and Cathy Evans, decided to enter and was required to make a submission using the topic ‘how technology is redefining gender equality in rural communities’.

Caitlin was ecstatic to learn she was the overall winner for NSW and is one of seven winners from across the nation.

“I’m really looking forward to the opportunity,” Caitlin said.

Caitlin is no stranger to public speaking, including taking part in a Rotary competition as well as a pitch at Evoke Ag.

She will also be part of the high school’s student leadership team in 2026.

Public speaking is a skill Caitlin has firmly grasped, and she encourages others to give it a go.

“It has made me more confident and given me the ability to think and talk on the spot,” Caitlin told The Courier.

Caitlin has used the skills to speak before local organisations, including taking part in the Narrabri Show Society Young Woman Competition.

“This is a great opportunity to further my skills and to meet new people,” Caitlin said of Country to Canberra.

“For me, this isn’t just about the skills. It’s also about the new connections and what they can bring you.”

Caitlin hopes other students in regional areas learn more about the program and apply in the future.

Looking beyond school, with Caitlin set to start her HSC year in 2026, she is hoping to study a Bachelor of Science at UNE.

As part of the Country to Canberra program selection process, Caitlin was also asked several questions including ‘what’s your favourite thing about living in rural Australia?’.

“My favourite thing about rural Australia is the unique communities and the sense of connectedness and support within them.

“Whether it’s my own or others that I come across while travelling the communities that are shaped by the land and people captivate me,” Caitlin responded.

Country to Canberra will run from November 22 to 25.
