Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of NSW, made an exciting visit to Narrabri last week with an itinerary of places to go and people to see.
The Governor spent three days in and around Gunnedah and Narrabri, experiencing the beauty, culture, and community spirit that makes this thriving, diverse, and innovative region so special.
In Narrabri, the Governor’s engagements included visiting the University of Sydney Plant Breeding Institute, touring Australian Recycled Plastics, meeting Narrabri High School students and staff,
and hearing about local aspirations from Narrabri Shire Council representatives.
Her Excellency also attended a lunch with the Polished Silver community group.
The day prior in Gunnedah, engagements included meeting Gunnedah Shire Council representatives, learning about Red Chief Local Aboriginal Land Council activities, touring Gunnedah Leather Processors, and attending the book launch of ‘The Story of Gabo’.
At the Sydney University Plant Breeding Institute visit, the Governor emersed herself in a smoking ceremony at arrival, later taking part in grain milling activities and walking through wheat fields accompanied by Guy Roth.
In conjunction with the day’s activities, CSIRO sent their Deadly in Generation STEM students to engage in the grain milling process, having the opportunity to talk and interact with Her Excellency.
Bernadette Melton, CSIRO Deadly in Generation STEM education officer, shared how important experiences like visiting the Plant Breeding Institute are for the program.
“CSIRO is working hard to connect science and innovation to society through our education and outreach initiatives. Our Deadly in Generation STEM program is connecting traditional knowledges to pathways in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), through culture and on country. It fosters an understanding and respect for Indigenous peoples and their contributions to STEM,” Bernadette said.
“By visiting the University of Sydney’s Plant Breeding Institute, Deadly in Generation STEM camp participants received hands on experiences with native grains, gained valuable connections to community and insights into potential career and study paths.”
