Earlier this week we attended the Local Government NSW Conference, where we put forward eight motions on issues that matter deeply to our shire, including replacing the former Resources for Regions program, increased regional roads funding, and a coordinated state-led response to PFAS contamination.

I am very pleased to report that all eight motions were adopted by LGNSW, which is an excellent outcome and a strong endorsement of the issues we continue to raise on behalf of our towns and villages.

Today I will be attending a housing forum to chase infrastructure dollars for our housing plans, because without roads, water, sewerage and essential enabling works, it is very difficult for regional communities to grow in the way residents expect and deserve.

It has been encouraging to see the completion of the major upgrades to Cinema 2 at The Crossing Theatre, which has now officially reopened.

The improved projector, upgraded sound system and refreshed technology bring it in line with Cinema 1 and make for a much sharper, more enjoyable experience for local families. The Crossing Theatre continues to be an important gathering place for residents young and old, and these upgrades will ensure it remains a modern and comfortable entertainment venue for years to come.

There are plenty of great movies showing at the moment, and I encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the improved cinema experience.

At last week’s council meeting the new name Town Hall Car Park was formally adopted, recognising the history of the former Narrabri Town Hall on that site.

I want to thank the volunteers of the Narrabri Historical Society for the work they continue to do in preserving our stories, photos and community history.

I also acknowledge the important contributions of our other museums and historical societies across the shire. You all play a valuable role in protecting our memories for future generations, and your dedication is deeply appreciated.

We have also wrapped up National Asbestos Awareness Month, though the message remains just as important as ever. Homes built before 1990 can still contain asbestos in many forms, and disturbing it can be dangerous.

Sadly, we have had incidents this year of asbestos being illegally dumped at transfer stations in Boggabri and Wee Waa, which not only disrupts operations but also puts the safety of residents and council staff at risk.

The safest and only appropriate way to manage asbestos is to use a licensed asbestos removalist, and all asbestos waste must be taken by appointment to the Narrabri Waste Management Facility in the correct contained format.

Thank you to those who continue to follow the rules and help keep our community safe.

On Tuesday, December 3, council and local disability service providers will host the International Day of People with Disability celebration from 10am at the Uniting Church Hall in Narrabri.

It is a meaningful opportunity to recognise the contribution of people with disability, their families and carers, and the many organisations working to support inclusion across our shire.

Later in the week, on Friday, December 5, the 2025 Narrabri Shire Christmas Pop Up Shop will open at the former Rockman’s store on Maitland Street from 10am. This is a wonderful chance to support local creators, makers and small businesses during the Christmas season, and I encourage everyone to pop in and take a look.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support local events, volunteer organisations and small businesses as we move through the busy end-of-year period.

Narrabri Shire’s strength comes from the way people come together, whether it is through community celebrations, supporting local shops, lending a hand at a hall or encouraging a young person to get involved.

Christmas time is a wonderful time of the year and it is critical for our local shops and hospitality venues, so I encourage everyone to shop locally where possible.

Remember that every dollar spent locally makes a big difference, and I look forward to seeing many of you at events across our towns and villages in the weeks ahead.
