Hello, my name is Josie Dawson, and I am from Moree, NSW.

I am in Year 9 at Moree Christian School and have come to The Courier in Narrabri to do work experience.

I enjoy writing and am considering becoming a journalist or something to do with writing when I finish school.

Every year, my school, Moree Christian School, takes part in a writing competition known as Write a Book in a Day.

The Write a Book in a Day program is a competition where teams of up to 10 students get together and write a fictional novel in 12 hours, using prompts given to us by the Kids Cancer Project team.

We then send a copy of these manuscripts, fully written, illustrated and edited, as well as a front cover, back cover and blurb to be judged.

To enter this competition, we must also have sponsors, which mostly are family members and people in the community who are willing to donate money for kids’ cancer research.

All the donations go straight to this worthy cause, and the winning book of Write a Book in a Day gets published and read by children in hospitals with cancer.

Since 2023, I have entered and supported this competition with a team of students from my school.

My team has never actually won the Write a Book in a Day competition; however, all the money we received from sponsors was still donated to research about kids’ cancer.

It is a great experience, made better by knowing that our donations are going to such a good cause.

I believe that The Courier offers me a great chance to be able to gain some first-hand experience in journalism, so that I can broaden my writing skills, as well as gain a greater understanding of what the job involves and how everything works, and I am incredibly grateful to them for taking me on this week.
