Narrabri District Women’s Cricket Association’s four teams put two weeks of washouts behind them on Saturday when they all took part in a blockbuster evening of super 10 cricket.
The first of two double-header rounds this season, which sees all four teams play two games each, delivered an action-packed four matches, with the defending champs Redfern Contracting starting off the season in style with two wins.
Last season’s third-placed side Wilga Hotel also got their 2025/26 campaign up and running in style as they too won both of their matches to end the night locked on 18 points alongside the team they will meet in a top-of-the-table round five clash this Saturday night.
Redfern Contacting challenged last season’s minor premiers and grand finalists Wahgunyah Dreamtime Mirri in their first match of the night on Saturday, and it was the defending champs that got the job done by nine wickets at Hogan Oval.
Wahgunyah batted first and made 7-30 in their 10 overs before the Redfern Harvesting ladies chased down the required total in the seventh over of the second innings, having only lost one wicket.
Molly Welsh and Angie Knox both top-scored for Wahgunyah with six runs each during the first innings, while Jade Williams starred with the ball for Redfern Contracting as she took a double-wicket maiden in the second over before going on to finish with 2-1 from two overs.
Kerri Atkin (2-4 from two overs), Grace Farrer (1-3 from one over) and Candice Stang (1-5 from two overs) also took wickets for the winning side.
The other round three match saw Wilga Hotel beat GFS Engineering by eight wickets at Leitch Oval.
GFS Engineering batted first in that match and made 1-28 in their 10 overs, and the Wilga Hotel ladies then chased that down in the fifth over of the second innings, having only lost two wickets.
GFS’s Milly Eames (8*) and Mandy Simpson (5*) both finished unbeaten in the first innings after Makayla Elford (3) was dismissed by Taryn Kirk (1-6 from two overs) in the third over.
Elford returned serve in the second innings as she dismissed Kirk (1) with the assistance of an Eames catch in the second over before taking a second wicket in the fifth over when she bowled Zoe Tomlinson (3).
However, Wilga Hotel opener Ness Rose did the bulk of the damage for the chasing side with an unbeaten 17 runs to guide them to an eight-wicket win.
Wilga Hotel remained on Leitch Oval for their round four clash, and they were required to bowl first again when they took on Wahgunyah.
They were up to the task again as they held the Wahgunyah ladies to 2-45 before chasing down the required total in nine overs to prevail by 10 wickets.
Rose starred again in that match as she took both of her side’s wickets in the first innings, the first of which she claimed with the opening ball as Kirk held onto a catch to dismiss Velvet Craigie for a golden duck.
Rose then bowled Zara Foley (2) during the third over before Mia Gould (16*) and Menzie Baker (9*) ended up unbeaten after 10 overs.
Rose then opened the batting with Mia Croker in the second innings and the duo chased down the required total in less than nine overs.
Rose top-scored again with 22, while Croker put 14 runs on the board in the 10-wicket win.
The other round four match was contested at Hogan Oval, where Redfern Contracting downed GFS Engineering by 28 runs.
Redfern Contracting batted first in that match and made 1-57 in their 10 overs before they held the chasing side to 8-29 in a match that went the distance.
Last season’s player of the final and batting average award winner Grace Farrer opened for Redfern Contracting and she led the way with an unbeaten 37 runs.
Chloe Harvey dismissed Ava Manton (3) in the seventh over, but that was the only wicket that fell as Grace Hardy (3*) finished unbeaten with Farrer at the end of the 10th over.
Elford (9*) was GFS’s best with the bat in the second innings, but her side fell 28 runs short of the required total.
Williams (3-6 from two overs and a runout) and her skipper Tori-Ann Geraghty (2-3 from two overs) were their side’s best with the ball in that second innings.
Both round five matches will be T20 contests, with Wahgunyah Dreamtime Mirri to meet GFS Engineering on Friday before Wilga Hotel take on Redfern Contracting on Saturday.
