Christmas is, for many people, a truly special time of year. It is a season marked by generosity and moments shared with family, friends and neighbours.
Across Narrabri Shire, there is a real sense of community at this time of year – from town centres decorated with lights, to local events that bring people together and the simple pleasure of catching up with someone you may not have seen for a while.
It was disappointing that last Friday’s Boggabri Christmas Carnival had to be cancelled due to weather, but I am pleased to remind everyone that the event has been rescheduled for this Friday, December 19, at Vickery Park. I encourage you to join me and head down to Boggabri to enjoy some Christmas joy.
These community events matter. They give us a chance to slow down, support local stallholders and pick up some last-minute Christmas gifts while soaking up the atmosphere that makes our towns and villages so special.
As we approach Christmas, it is also important to recognise that this season can be difficult for some. For those who are experiencing their first Christmas after the loss of a partner, close friend or family member, the festive period can be deeply challenging.
If you know someone who may be struggling, a phone call, a visit or a simple message can make a real difference.
Compassion and kindness are as much a part of Christmas as celebration.
I also want to take a moment to sincerely thank those members of our community who continue working throughout the holiday period.
Our police, ambulance paramedics, firefighters, nurses, doctors, hospital staff, supermarket workers, council staff and many others will be on duty over Christmas and New Year, ensuring our communities remain safe, supported and functioning.
Looking back, many of us will be quietly grateful to see the end of 2025.
It has been a big year for council, with significant challenges and complex decisions. However, I firmly believe we have come through the year stronger, more resilient and better prepared for what lies ahead. There is much to be thankful for as we move forward together.
I would also like to thank everyone who has made a conscious effort to support local businesses this festive season.
A number of business owners have spoken to us about achieving reasonable sales, which is encouraging in the current economic climate. Shopping locally keeps money circulating within our shire and helps sustain jobs, services and community life.
As Christmas and the New Year approach, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy 2026. Please take care on the roads, look out for one another, and enjoy time with family and friends.
On behalf of Narrabri Shire Council, thank you for your ongoing support, and I look forward to working with you again in the year ahead.
