Motorists are being urged to take extra care on the roads this Christmas, with double demerit points set to apply over the peak holiday period.

Double demerits will be in force for 12 consecutive days, from December 24, 2025 through to  January 4, 2026, covering Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

The measures are typically introduced during major holiday periods and long weekends, when traffic volumes are higher and the risk of serious crashes increases.

Police will enforce the penalties across the entire period, with double demerit points applying from the start date through to midnight on the final day.

During the double demerit period, drivers caught committing key offences will receive twice the usual number of demerit points. These offences include speeding, illegal use of mobile phones, failing to wear a seat belt, and riding a motorcycle without a helmet.

Authorities have also reminded drivers that mobile phone detection cameras are active across NSW and the ACT. Drivers caught using a mobile phone during the double demerit period face a $423 fine along with 10 demerit points.

According to the NSW government, demerit points remain on a driver’s record for three years from the date of the offence. All licence holders begin with zero demerit points, which accumulate as offences are committed.

Road safety authorities are urging motorists to slow down, stay focused and follow the rules to help protect themselves, their passengers and other road users during the busy holiday travel period.
