Narrabri Shire Libraries is celebrating the success of its newest Adult Literacy Tutor volunteers, while encouraging other community members to consider becoming part of the growing program.

Three local volunteers recently completed their adult literacy tutor training, working through the course together and demonstrating the power of community-led learning and support.

Mayor Darrell Tiemens congratulated the volunteers on their achievement and encouraged others to follow their lead.

“These volunteers are making a real difference by helping adults build confidence in reading, writing and everyday communication,” Mayor Tiemens said.

“Their commitment shows how strong our community spirit is, and we would love to see more people step forward to become tutors.”

Adult literacy tutors support people with practical, everyday tasks such as reading a newspaper, filling out forms, applying for work or improving written communication.

No formal teaching qualifications are required, just strong reading and writing skills, patience and a willingness to listen and encourage.

Free volunteer tutor training is available through a series of easy-to-complete online modules, providing participants with the skills to support adults in improving their literacy and numeracy.

Narrabri Library is offering the adult literacy tutoring service locally in 2026 with trained volunteer tutors.

Community members interested in becoming the next adult literacy tutor, or learning more about the program, are encouraged to contact Naomi Radford at Narrabri Library on 6792 3336.
