A snippet from The Courier in February 1920, sent in by a correspondent, shows that lengthy heatwaves are not entirely uncommon in Narrabri. “That it has been hot during this month no one will deny, and old hands say that it is many years since they experienced such a continuous run of hot weather,” The Courier published at the time. “The average temperature for the month of February now stands at 101.8 degrees [38.7 Celsius]. Sixteen days out of 21 have registered over the century, while on two occasions the thermometer stood at 99 [37.2 Celsius]. The high reading of 107 [41.6 Celsius] has happened on three occasions, one at 106 [41], three at 105 [40.5], one at 104 [40], one at 103 [39.4], four at 102 [38.8], two at 101 [38.3], and one at 100 [37.7].
