It’s Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, March 1, an event which brings communities together to remove litter and protect the environment. It commenced in 1989 by Ian Kiernan AO, and has since grown into the nation’s largest community-based environmental event. Last year was its 35th anniversary and Clean Up Australia chair, Ian’s daughter Pip Kiernan said: “I know my Dad would be so proud to see what started as a local community Clean Up event on Sydney Harbour, turned into the national day of practical action that is so loved by communities across the country. Soft plastics and cigarette butts are amongst the commonly reported items collected by volunteers who are encouraged to report their findings at each Clean Up.” To get involved, contact the Clean Up Australia Day website to register and receive a free Clean Up kit.
