The Wee Waa Golf Club Open was taken out by local golfer David Avery for the second time in as many years on Sunday after he was the only player at the tournament to finish under par.
The 32-year-old Wee Waa man shot a one-under-par score of 71, just over one year since he won his first Wee Waa Open with a 73 in 2025.
Avery won this year’s event by four shots from Narrabri’s Kane Voysey, who finished the day with a three-over-par 75.
Wee Waa’s Ty Baker was next best with 77, just over one year after he was the 2025 runner-up with 74.
Avery told The Courier that it was pleasing to win his hometown open once again.
“I hit them very well. I was playing pretty well at four-under through 12. I was looking good at that stage,” Avery said.
“I sort of got tired from there and made a few silly bogeys and then finished with a couple of pars.
“It was a good achievement. It’s always good to win your home open. It was a good feeling.”
There were 32 golfers that contested this year’s Wee Waa Open, with numbers down due to other golf events on and several Wee Waa Golf Club regulars being away through either travel or work.
Golfers travelled from Narrabri, Bingara, Gunnedah and Boggabri to play alongside the local Wee Waa golfers.
