The reduction in fuel prices, expected after the government halved its fuel excise should be welcome news to motorists. Australian motorists paid $15.71 billion in fuel excise in 2023-24. A correspondent to Topical noted that the average global petrol price was about $2.15 (AUD) in March, with Australia’s prices a bit above average. Among the most expensive countries were Hong Kong (almost $4/l) and Iceland ($3.40/l). The US is among the lowest of the developed countries, at about $1.91/l while Australia averaged $2.38/l for the month.
