Narrabri resident Myra Smith celebrated her 100th birthday with a special morning tea at Whiddon last Friday morning.

Mrs Smith was joined by family and friends as well as Whiddon residents and staff for the occasion.

Well wishes were received from dignitaries including the King and Prime Minister. However, special recognition was also received from Pope Leo XIV, through an apostolic blessing, much to Mrs Smith’s delight.

Mrs Smith is a well-known member of the St Francis Xavier’s Parish community.

Mrs Smith was joined by her children Dennis Smith and Sue Eurell as well as other family for the milestone celebration.

Speeches were made by Whiddon staff and Mrs Smith’s family, including daughter-in-law Janice Smith and grandson Justin Smith.

“I’m so excited that everyone has come here today,” Janice told the gathering.

Mrs Smith and her daughter-in-law share a close bond. In true Janice style, an exquisite and intricately decorated cake formed part of the special day.

Janice offered the family’s thanks to Whiddon for the amazing celebration.

Justin told the gathering of the important role Mrs Smith had played in all of their lives.

“She is the most inspirational person I’ve ever known,” he said.

“She has gifted us all this amazing life.

“Giving her great-grandchildren has been the greatest gift we could ever provide.”

Attendees at the morning tea heard that Mrs Smith has lived a life grounded in kindness, resilience, and connection.

From working as a dental assistant in her early years to dedicating three decades volunteering with Meals on Wheels and St Vincent de Paul. She has spent much of her life giving back to others.

Mrs Smith is known for her warm and welcoming nature, enjoying daily socialising, reconnecting with familiar faces, and making new residents feel at home.

When asked the secret to a long and happy life, she offered one piece of advice.

“Life is not always easy, but you’ve got to make the best of it, make yourself happy – and a bit of luck helps too,” she said.

Reflecting on her life, Mrs Smith said her advice to her younger self would be to “enjoy your children while they are young.”

A proud rugby league fan, Mrs Smith still enjoys keeping up with the game and tipping, and remains socially active, getting around with her walker and embracing each day with positivity.
