Councils address illegal tobacco trade in region

Councils in the North West and New England regions are calling on the state government to address the illegal tobacco trade. In a mayoral minute at the June meeting of Narrabri Shire Council, mayor Darrell Tiemens moved a number items relating to the unlawful sale of tobacco. Wee Waa Lions Club had another roaring year of representation, volunteering at a variety of events across the district. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to name a local function a Lions member didn’t contribute to in some way. In the year 2024/25 Wee Waa Lions Club members put in a whopping 973 hours of service and fundraised an impressive $7500. Book lovers rejoice: Rotary’s sale is back in Maitland Street

Books are stacked and ready to go at the Rotary Club of Narrabri’s popular Maitland Street book sale. The organisation has opened the doors to its pop-up book shop this week. The shop, located at the former newsagency building, is a major fundraiser for Rotary. Reading interests of all tastes are covered, with the range including fiction and non-fiction as well as different genres in each section. Fatigue believed to be major factor after vehicle crashed through police station fence

A 76-year-old Far North Queensland man has been fined for negligent driving after crossing onto the wrong side of the highway and crashing through the Bellata Police Station fence. The incident occurred at 4.55am on June 24. The man had been driving a four-wheel drive and was towing a custom-made trailer. Police believe fatigue was a major factor of the incident. After veering onto the wrong side of the highway, the driver mounted the gutter and damaged the fence, sign and flag pole while also colliding with a vehicle parked in the driveway.
