“We see nothing in this for Boggabri or Narrabri…”

Boggabri community does not favour the proposed extension of the Vickery coal mine, the chair of the Boggabri Business and Community Progress Association John Shaw said today.

The Vickery mine is on the Narrabri-Gunnedah shires’ boundary, roughly one third in Narrabri and two thirds in Gunnedah local government areas, about 25km north of Gunnedahs.

“We see nothing in this for Boggabri or Narrabri, all the benefits flow to Gunnedah” Mr Shaw said.

“There is nothing in this for us except more stress on our infrastructure.

“There is very little mention of Boggabri or Narrabri in the impact study, and this is consistent with the way Whitehaven has treated Narrabri shire for some time now” Mr Shaw claimed.

“We are not saying anything new.

“We have said it since 2015,we have said it to Whitehaven, and we said it at our recent community awards night. The Mayor Cathy Redding is supportive of Boggabri’s position and Narrabri Shire Council said the same in their submission that ‘Whitehaven needs to be doing more in Narrabri Shire’.

“We totally support our council for writing to the Planning Commission seeking a public hearing on the proposed extension of the Vickery mine, and that the hearing be held in Boggabri.

“We congratulate Council for taking this stance, and we definitely support a Boggabri hearing” Mr Shaw said.
