Travel times and road safety on the busy Newell Highway will be improved with delivery of more than 45 kilometres of new overtaking lanes.
NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey was in Narrabri today to announce the further upgrades of the highway
“The Newell Highway is the road and freight backbone of inland NSW stretching from the Victorian border to Queensland, that connects regional communities,” Mrs Pavey said.
The Newell Highway Program Alliance will deliver at least 30 additional overtaking lanes which will provide around 25 minutes of travel time savings.
Each overtaking lane will be approximately 1.5 kilometres in length.
In the Barwon electorate, seven overtaking lanes have been identified in the minimum of 30 to be delivered.
They include northbound and southbound overtaking lanes, at Dusty’s Creek around 10 kilometres north of Gilgandra, a northbound overtaking lane at Edgeroi, a southbound overtaking lane 17 kilometres north of Coonabarabran, a northbound overtaking lane at Pilliga, 14 kilometres north of Coonabarabran northbound and southbound overtaking lanes at Marthaguy, nine kilometres south of Gilgandra.
In the Northern Tablelands electorate, an additional overtaking lane will also be constructed north of Moree at Camurra.
Work on the first set of overtaking lanes is scheduled to start in March at Dusty’s Creek northbound and southbound, around 10 kilometres north of Gilgandra.
The NSW Government has entered the new era of road delivery with the announcement of a new partnership with the private sector to deliver the additional overtaking lanes along the Newell Highway, Mrs Pavey said.
