Many hundreds of Narrabri residents have enjoyed the cheerful services of Meals on Wheels volunteers – and the fresh food they deliver – over the past half century.
For housebound or elderly residents, the regular visits of MOW volunteers delivering their meals are their only contact with the world outside their door.
MOW is a valued community service which is now preparing to celebrate its 50th birthday.
On May 18, the group will host a special anniversary event to mark its half century of meal deliveries to a large swathe of the Narrabri community.
“We will have a birthday function at the Bowling Club and hope many will attend,” said MOW committee president Lorena (Pixie) Aldridge.
“This will involve the whole spectrum of supporters and volunteers”.
And there will be many of them.
“We hope to see as many as possible,” said Mrs Aldridge.
“Some volunteers may not be listed so we may not be able to invite them personally, but they should come along.”
Over the past five decades, MOW has been supported by volunteer delivery people and organisers who gave up their time, sometimes just an hour or two a month, sometimes much more, to help.
“We have had the assistance of hundreds of volunteers over the years,” said Mrs Aldridge.
“At the moment MOW has about 100 helpers delivering up to 28 meals on the town side and about 30 on the West side of Narrabri each day.
“It’s hard to quantify our actual number of helpers because businesses have groups with one or more volunteers,” said Mrs Aldridge.
