Life for many families in the Narrabri Shire has been, and continues to be, very difficult over the past few years as the drought impacts heavily on their livelihoods, personal relationships and their mental wellbeing.
A local community program ‘Neighbours in Need’, launched by Rotary, has played an important part in supporting people, from farming families and small business, in these hard times.
The Rotarians of Narrabri, Wee Waa and Boggabri did not seek recognition but 360 of their fellow Rotarians from a wide swathe of regional NSW last week applauded the Neighbours in Need program with the award of the prestigious 2019 Community Service trophy.
The presentation was made at the Rotary District 9650 Convention in Armidale last week with representatives of nearly all 57 clubs in attendance.
Narrabri Rotary president Darrell Tiemens accepted the award on behalf of the program participants, Narrabri, Boggabri and Wee Waa Rotary.
“Narrabri, Wee Waa and Boggabri Rotarians can be very proud,” said District Governor Lorraine Coffey.
“Mr Tiemens gave a presentation at the Governor’s Dinner the night before the conference to give everyone an overview of what has been achieved by Neighbours in Need.
“That was really fantastic.
“The Narrabri shire can be very proud of its community and really proud of the Rotarians in the community,” said Mrs Coffey.
“The Neighbours in Need program has been able to help deliver support not only in this shire but others,” said Mr Tiemens.
