Creek weir study is proposed

A group of Narrabri residents is enthusiastic about a proposal for a feasibility study into construction of a weir across the Narrabri Creek.

The weir would provide a permanently deeper and wider body of water through town.

The proposal, first mooted in 1999, has been informally tabled at a Narrabri Shire Council workshop meeting in the past.

However, the addition of ‘a preliminary feasibility study into the establishment of a weir down-stream from The Crossing Theatre’ was included in the council’s

2019/2020 Operational Plan at last meeting, moved by Cr Ron Campbell and adopted by the council.

Cr Ron Campbell is a strong advocate for investigation into a Narrabri Creek weir.

“I understand the design process was quite well advanced when the project was first discussed years ago,” Cr Campbell told The Courier.

“Let us investigate the possibilities and weigh up the benefits.

“I would like to see the project actively researched and with the expectation that it is something we can achieve for the community.”

Community members canvassed by The Courier are also strongly supportive of the proposal.

“The aim is to have the concept investigated, but with the expectation that it would be achieved” one said.

The major project would not be an overnight exercise, the supporters’ group emphasises.

However, as one said ‘a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.’
