The polished brass casing of a five inch naval shell, fired by the Australian Navy missile destroyer HMAS Hobart 3 off the coast of California last year, has joined another shell casing as part of Narrabri RSL sub branch’s collection of military memorabilia.

The shell case was a gift from the crew of HMAS Hobart to Narrabri RSL sub branch, organised by Narrabri resident Peter McEvoy’s son-in-law Chief Petty Officer Sean Goff who is serving on Hobart.

Mr McEvoy presented the casing to RSL sub branch president Gary Mason at Monday’s Remembrance Day ceremony.

There have been three RAN ships named Hobart – Mr Mason served on HMAS Hobart 2 in the Vietnam War era.

The shell casing is a gleaming trophy, elegantly inscribed with the message from HMAS Hobart to Narrabri.

It joins another shell, fired from HMAS Toowoomba, and also donated by CPO Goff and his crewmates several years ago.
