I would like to know.

The tree that was on the corner of Lloyd and Balonne Street was a seemingly healthy tree.

It has been cut off at ground level.

My question is, why was a seemingly healthy tree cut down?

A council spokesperson responds:

‘With the continuing drought there are a number of street and public space trees under stress.

Council continually assesses trees throughout the town and updates and prioritises works needed in consultation with arborists.

Trees that pose a danger, are dead, in decay or show faults that could cause harm or damage will in most cases be removed.

Council is concerned about the current state of street trees in all the towns and villages with a large number showing signs of stress.

A tree removal decision is not taken lightly in consideration of the long term effect on the street amenity and microclimate to an area.’
