They have all lived in the community as ‘Australians’ for years, but Narrabri Shire officially welcomed some new Australian citizens at a naturalisation ceremony on Thursday.

The mayor Cathy Redding conducted the formalities which saw our new citizens from England, South Africa, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and India become ‘official’ Aussies.

The ceremony was witnessed by friends and family.

Naturalisation is a simple procedure but significant. As the mayor said in her address to the group, Australian citizenship brings with it major benefits, as residents of a democracy, but also responsibilities. Another citizenship ceremony will be held on Australia Day next year.
