Delving into The Courier files to research material from the Couriers of the past 100 years for a centenary publication, our archivist recovered a letter to the editor from the late Rex Parker. In September 1973 Rex was a resident of Grafton and enclosed a cutting from the Grafton Examiner. “Some of the 500 visiting rugby union players in Grafton for the weekend’s Rugby Union carnival left their mark on the town” the Examiner reported. There was chaos and vandalism and drunken misbehaviour across town, the paper said. “But no Grafton players were involved and the players from Narrabri had been real gentlemen and not involved either.”
