“Where is the Narrabri Citizen of the Year’ honour board” asked a contributor to the Thumbs Up and Down column last week.

Following the query, it was revealed that the Citizen’s honour board – and the Senior Citizen of the Year honour roll – have been safely kept in storage at Narrabri Shire Library.

The boards were originally displayed at the Library but following changes to the building usage, no wall space was available.

The Citizen of the Year was originally an Apex Club driven annual project. Time rolled on and Apex was discontinued, along with its project, but Citizens of the Year were still recorded.

Many will recall the people on the current board – starting with Vida Summers, 1965-6. All played a significant role in the community.

Similarly, the Senior Citizen of the Year board, with names from 1979 until 1994 is another record of individuals’ achievement.

The Council has been seeking the names of award recipients for both honour rolls, but records of the Senior Citizens’ awards have not been easy to finalise. Who can help?

When the board is completed a new home for it will be found to properly recognise our community achievers.
