An audience of more than 190 applauded the announcement of Boggabri’s Ron Boxsell as Narrabri Shire Senior of the Year at yesterday’s Seniors Week luncheon in Narrabri.

The award each year recognises a ‘senior’ member of the shire community who goes above and beyond in service to his or her fellow citizens.

Ron Boxsell is an active member of the Boggabri community, and has served with many community organisations including Lions Club, Boggabri SES, Whynella Rural Fire Brigade, Boggabri Men’s and Tractor Shed and the annual Boggabri Drovers Campfire.

There were two other nominees for the Senior of the Year title, Gordon Cain and Irene Hobden.

The luncheon was hosted by Narrabri Shire Council and the Mayor Cathy Redding in welcoming everyone said, “this year’s theme for the 2020 festival is ‘Love to Celebrate’ – to celebrate is to acknowledge a significant or happy day, or event, with a social gathering or enjoyable activity.

“We celebrate many special days and events in our lifetime, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, family reunions, retirement and other celebrations of life.

“Today’s luncheon is an example of a social gathering bringing people together to celebrate being a Senior and it is Narrabri Shire Council’s way of thanking you for all that you do.”

“Our seniors are a valued asset and without the contribution of so many of you who sit here today many organisations would fold.”

Prior to enjoying lunch, the children from the Community Kids Early Education Centre had the attendees singing along, laughing, and clapping as they performed three delightful songs.

Well known bush poet Max Pringle recited a poem he had written to match the theme, ‘Love to Celebrate’
